I do a lot of work pushing paper and doing things for my bosses that require a decision to be made. The decisions are usually made by the boss after he asks the question "Whats the so what"? For the uninitiated that basically means "If I didnt take your recommendation, what would happen" So then I need to have my ducks in a row and have a list of things that make my recommendation the one that the boss chooses. Hows that relevant to the blog?
Well it looks like we might well be having an election shortly and it should be up to each and every Canadian to ask themselves "Whats the so What" from the perspective of how they vote. My mind is made up and will probably not change. I look forward to being able to make my mark if need be and to help possibly have a say in forming the next government in this country. Lets look at the options and ask ourselves "Whats the so what"
Steven Harper and the Conservatives. Say what you like about the guy but he is keeping us afloat in a world thats tanking around us. We have a standard of living thats second to none in the world and have not had to live through the mortgage fiasco thats gone on in the states. Thats partly due to our banking system also so he cant take all the credit.
The Bloc cant form a government and never will because they dont run candidates in enough ridings in Canada, so they arent a problem right? Not so fast. There was a time when the BQ was her majesties loyal opposition in this country due to the amount of ridings that are in Quebec. So any votes for the BQ is really a lost vote for getting anything done in this country. All they want is to sit in their corner of the house and complain, reminding us about that little french problem we have.
The NDP is a real dark horse to win a government. Jack, Olivia and their crowd are the socialist side of the group. They really remind me of Robin Hood because they want to rob from the rich to give to the poor. Thats what socialism is. we can all expect to live on minimum wage and a guaranteed income, however low that is. The So what is that it takes away any incentive to work hard and make a better life for your family seeing as they would only take it away from you anyway. No real threat.
Liberals and Iggy... Dont really know how to take him. He tries to come across as the "working mans" politician but he seems more like an elitist than anything else. He has been out of country for 30 odd years teaching at prestigious places like Harvard and Cambridge. That doesnt enamour him to the working man. Recently the Liberals held a rally someplace that was supposed to connect the liberal leader to the working man. They held this rally at 2 pm. How can a "working man" show up at a rally at 2pm? See thats the way Liberal think. Iggy also has no "Team" to speak of. Theres Bob Rae, whos record as an Ontario NDPer speaks for itself and who will probably never get another vote in that province. Then theres guys like Scott Brison, another floor crosser which to me brings into question his ethics, and Dominic LeBlanc, who it seems has politics in his blood, having followed in Daddies footsteps. The Liberals also don't really have a platform to run on. It seems to me that their policy is to go against the Conservative policy, whatever that is. What if the Conservative policy is a good one for the country, do they still oppose it?
The Liberals are the only real threat to form a government in this country besides the Conservatives. The problem is that the liberals power base is in Ontario and Quebec. Whats the so What? You can form a government in this country without holding one seat from outside Ontario and Quebec, thats the so what. Your party can be shut out in 8 provinces and 3 territories and you still will form the government if you win enough seats in Ont and Que.
Its no wonder that theres so much opposition to the Liberals outside of Ontario and Quebec, and even talks of western sovereignty. Looking at it from a fiscal perspective Alberta gives more money to Canada for equalization payments than Ont and Que but doesnt get the same amount of equality at the table. Hardly seems fair does it?

Comfort
Well its almost 6 am and I have already been up for two hours. I checked my mail and played many games of on line poker to pass the time. I havent slept well all week and I equate it all to comfort. Dont get me wrong to room I have is comfortable. It just not MY comfortable. At home we have a king size bed thats pillow topped, individually pocketed coils, sleep on a cloud, theres an MMA match going on on the other half of the bed and I cant feel the movement on my side of the bed comfortable. So the bed I have, while adequate, isnt MY bed. The pillows arent MY pillows. You get my drift.
As I age I find that my comforts are important. Its comforting to be with your "stuff". Its comforting to be able to have a coffee when you feel like it that doesnt involve a logistical planning exercise to get one. It comforting to have all the things around you that make you feel like you are at home.
When I was in the army one of my old Sgts told me that anyone can be uncomfortable in the field, its all a matter of not doing anything to make yourself comfortable. While I am not uncomfortable right now theres just something missing. And to me thats all the stuff that makes me feel comfort. I guess when you get older comfort is more a psychological than physiological feeling.
I got to see Tina tonight also. I got the nickel tour of her workplace after which we went to supper and had a good gab for a couple of hours. The whole thing was way too short but I didnt have a car and the logistical nightmare of getting around town popped up. So after supper I put her on the bus home and I grabbed a cab back to the base. But in the outcome it was great to see her and shes got jam now:)
She's always Jonesing for her mommas jam.

The older I get
They say that change is inevitable.....Why does it have to happen all of a sudden? As I get older I find comfort in things staying the same. Yeah, I am in the wrong job for that. One thing about what I do is that change is constant. Thats because theres no continuity in my line of work. Everyonne has a "Vision" but only has a few years to implement it before moving onto bigger or better things. That give the person very little time to implement their vision and get it on the rails before the next boss takes over and comes out with their own vision.
If you dont get seen by your bosses as being able to lead change, then theres a chance that you wont get picked up for promotions or new positions. So every three to four years the vision changes and the wheel goes round and round.....
Stability is a good thing. Just dont let the good idea fairy light onto your shoulder. And for gods sake keep the little bastard away from your boss.....If not you'll be reinventing the world every three years.

Best person for the job......
There's a social engineering group in Hamilton Ontario who goes by the name of "Community Coalition against Racism" who is actively advocating racism.....What's that you say!!!!!....Let me explain.
In 2010 Hamilton hired 12 new firefighters. All were white and one was a woman. In 2009 they hired 11 firefighters. All of them were white and none were women. According to the "Community Coalition against Racism thats no good. In fact Mr. Ken Stone. the chair of the CCAR is quoted as saying the following in the papers:
"CCAR has been trying to get an official meeting with Mayor Bob Bratina for some time to ensure this item isn’t stricken from the budget as it was last year. But we need the help of ordinary Hamiltonians of every racial origin who believe in fairness to get involved in the 2011 budget process by phoning their city councillors (who are all white), by writing letters to the mayor and to the editor of The Spectator, by taking stands in their churches and community organizations and by using social media, all to demand the city act now to ensure the fire department is finally integrated."
In thinking that they are lobbying for fairness in hiring practises they are in fact advocating racism against a group of people. Its been done before and its called affirmative action. The wikipedia definition of Affirmative action is:
policies that take factors including "race, color, religion, sex, or national origin"[1] into consideration in order to benefit an underrepresented group, usually as a means to counter the effects of a history of discrimination. The focus of such policies ranges from employment and education to public contracting and health programs.
So by advocating affirmative action because of the narrow mindedness of our ancestors they are de facto being racist against other races.
Think of it this way. Do you want YOUR firefighter to be the best candidate for the job, who won it through a fair and open competition, or do you want YOUR firefighter to be the one who didnt win the competition but was hired because of their skin colour?
Whatever happened to hiring the best person for the job regardless of their race, colour or sex?
I'll leave you with a quote from the Rev Jesse Jackson:

Wacky news of the week...AKA are you F$king kidding me?
A man in ALBERTA successfully beat a traffic ticket because it was in English only. The case goes to the Supreme Court, where judges side with the wacky driver demanding the province spend a small fortune in legal costs to ensure the driver can continue his legal battle so people who break driving laws can read about their crimes in two official languages.
This didn't come cheap either. It will cost hundreds of thousands of dollars to get all this on the rails so that the most English of Provinces "gets in line"....Makes one wonder what would happen if I got a ticket in Quebec and asked for it in English.....
How about the case of a woman who, for whatever reason fired one of her employees. The woman was a strict muslim who wore strict muslim dress and was only employed at the shop for a few weeks.
But when the muslim woman took her ex-employer to the human rights tribunal (HRT) they immediately sided with the muslim woman and never let the employer make her case. Its going to cost the employer $36000 and if she doesn't pay then the HRT will come after her house, sell it and make the payment.
The thing is though a court, a real court not a kangaroo court like an HRT, said that the ruling is illegal and illogical but the HRT is still pressing their case AND paying for the legal representation of the complainant.
a Toronto University study (read public funded money) came up with the stunning finding that children need to wear helmets, balls need to be deflated and goalposts need to be padded because of the incidence of injuries to kids playing soccer.......WTF! Its a kids game, Stop bubble wrapping them and let them play the game....but academics have studied it so it must be correct.
Lastly, To round off the week, two NDP MPs stepped forward to insist if the CRTC relaxes its control of our airwaves, American-style hatred will fill Canadian television screens and radio stations. What these fellows really mean is they will be forced to tolerate more people who do not like the NDP. There are, after all, tens of millions of such sensible Canadians out there.

When did the neurotics, the special-interest obsessives and the control fanatics take over in this great land, and is it too late to use them for soccer practice? Answers please in both languages and have them vetted by the NDP.

You have the right to remain silent......But not the ability.
Another great article from Lorne Gunter in the National Post today that speaks volumes about what some of our politicians think we can and cannot say.....
Seems that there is a law right now which states that news channels cannot broadcast "any false or misleading news". Well that law has been deemed to be to vague and wouldn't stand up to a charter fight so the CRTC has been directed to change the rules to state that broadcasters wouldn't "knowingly" broadcasts news that is "false or misleading and that endangers or is likely to endanger the lives, health or safety of the public."
Seems like a good idea right? Well not if you are in the NDP. Its seems that they believe that changing the rules will open the Canadian broadcast landscape wide open to all sorts of right wing propaganda.
According to Charlie Angus we would have Fox News North spewing all sorts of hate and untruths over the airwaves. Its a little presumptuous isn't it ? There are many many Canadians who have conservative leanings who listen to and watch Fox news and people like Glen Beck and Rush Limbaugh on a regular basis because they find the news appealing to their own beliefs. What makes all these people wrong? If I went up to Charlie Angus and said that you cant watch CBC or read the Toronto Star because it was too left wing do you think I would be well liked?
Well Charlie, on thing about free speech is you shouldnt be able to squash it, no matter who you are. Speaking the way he did just laid out all the biases that are dangerous from the perspective of politicians making decisions about what is "good" and "bad" speech.
It also goes a long way towards leftist views of what free speech is. By definition whatever broadcasters agree with them are factual and objective, while those who dont agree with leftist policies are branded as bigoted and dishonest. Mr. Gunter has a theory about why this is. It would seem that the left is so used to being in charge around here that they have gotten used to having public debate almost entirely to themselves.
As David Frum put it " liberal-lefties are all for freedom of expression until they are shocked by the realization that not everyone agrees with them."
Once the left realizes that not everyone agrees with them then their reaction is to try and silence their opponents.
If you think its not happening think again.

If thats the way you feel, go home.
Why are people protesting in Canada about the problems that are going on in Egypt? Granted, these people are of Egyptian descent and live in Canada now. Some might have even taken citizenship here. So in essence they have a vested interest in whats going on, seeing as the rest of the family is probably still there, but really is it doing any good.
Nope. The average Canadian of whatever heritage doesnt give a rats ass about whats going on in Egypt. The government is doing what it can by making sure Canadian citizens are safe and accounted for and thats as far as that effort is going. Some Canadians may choose to stay behind and continue thier work in the country but on the whole theres about 1/2 of one percent of Canadians even care.
Yet people in Canada are protesting. They are protesting here for democratic change there. Does that seem weird to anyone else. Yes, its a noble cause but if you're going to demonstrate for a cause then you need to take the Real Estate mantra in account. Location, Location, Location.
I would surmise that if these people were somehow miraculously transported to Egypt there would'nt be near the amount of fervor about this. Thats because its dangerous to foment change in a place where the change needs to happen. People in some countries who have demonstrated for change to governments have disappeared, never to be seen again. There are other regimes where its not even allowable to disagree with the government, lest one take their life in their hands.
So I'm not saying that there isnt a need for change in Egypt. Heck, I'm all about the democratic process in every country. What I'm saying is that the people who are demonstrating here in Canada need to realize that they have a huge shield in front of them protecting their right to free speech. The problem with having a shield in front of you though is that most of the time what you are yelling isnt directed toward those who you want to hear it. It gets reflected backwards and gets lost in the din if daily life.

Are you Tired........
Of being treated like a complete imbecile by television? You know what I mean. The commercials who are trying to shill their latest product to you becaue you are a complete idiot and cant live without it. You know you need it because god forbid you have to crack an egg and actually cook it without causing severe psychological damage to yourself and being percieved as a failure as a human being......Oh, the horror.
Television, it seems, is beginning to pander to the lowest common denominator. It has become the colliseum games of this era. Its designed to give mass entertainment to the unwashed who just want to turn off thier brains and forget about their lives. If it wasnt how do you explain reality shows like Survivor, Ice Road Truckers, Dog the bounty hunter, American Chopper, American Idol, Ice Pilots, Instant beauty pagent, Operation Repo, Say yes to the Dress, Toddlers and Tairas, Maury Povich, Gerry Springer and anything on E! channel, just to name a few.
Whatever happened to entertainment? Where are the TV shows that were designed to make us think or give us a laugh without it being at another humans expense.
Out of the two hundred or so channels that the cable company makes me subscribe to just so I can watch the 5 that I like, there is nothing that equates to quality TV on the mainstream channels. In order to get good thought provoking programs you need to have the "specialty" channels like National Geographic Channel, Science Channel, Discovery World, History Channel and HDNet, again just to name a few. Then and only then you get something that will make you perk up and say "wow".
Maybe its time to turn off the TV, go outside and shield your eyes from the sun and see whats actually going on in the world, instead of some programmers perception of what the world is.

We're Doomed
Is it a function of age or are more and more people in this country becoming stupid? I find that the older I get the more I think that we're doomed as a country. Let me explain.
I spend quite a bit of time on the new websites like CBC.ca and CTV.ca. I also manage to frequent quite a few newspaper websites like the Hugely Left Wing Toronto Star, Middle of the road National Post and at least one Sun newspaper, who tend to veer to the right. Thats usually for the Sunshine Girl, but I digress :). I usually spend my time browsing the regular news but mostly its for the Politics news and I have come to a realization that whomever said that only 15% of Canadians are following Politics is correct. The problem though, is that 100% of people are still able to comment on these websites. Extrapolating that even further, subtract 15% of the knowledgable comments from the total comments (100%) means tha 85% of the comments left by the public are utter bullshit.
People do feel free to comment though, no matter how stupid they come across. You really cant blame them though with the present crop of politicians we have and with individuals being so wrapped up in their own lives, eally, who has time for politics?
Well we do, and we should. Right now we have a minority government tht has been in power longer than most majority governments. Why is that? Yeah OK, Michael Ignattief is viewed as an elitist prig with a silver spoon in his mouth who doesnt connect with John Q Public at all. Jack Layton is supposed to be the hero of the working classes, all about the union and workers rights and all for the little guy. Well Jack the little guy has a few issues with you. Lets start with gun onwership. The little guy likes to hunt and fish and you are telling the little guy that you dont think he can be trusted with his guns without big brother watching, and your MP's who voted for bill C-391 in first reading did a huge flip flop on subsequent readings. The little guys dont forget that Jack,
So is it the milquetoast leaders we have vying to be able to move into 24 Sussex or is it that people think Steven Harper is doing good work. If you read CBC.ca comments section you wouldnt think so. But you cant argue with results. Five years in minority is a good record. If Iggy and Jack would grow a pair and do thier job maybe we could get a majority government and the business of running this country could carry on without all the in-fighting and nit picking. If it turns out that the people of this country picks a Conservative Majority then we will know that Iggy was the problem, if they choose a Liberal Majority then it will be Harper whose time it is to go. And Jack? Sorry Jack, you havent got a snowballs cahnce in hell of forming a majority. And if there is an election coming up I want two things.
1) The oppositions word, in advance, whether or not they are thinking of a coalition.
2) The people of this country to take an interest in politics and not just beak off about things they have no knowledge of.

Global Warming my Ass and other thoughts
Today will be a bit of a ramble as theres no real direction going on in my brain pan:
1) Winnipeg. -35 with the wind chill right now. And theres damn little wind. Tonight will be -45 with the wind chill. So wheres the palm trees growing at Portage and Main dammit. I want my palm trees. We have enough snow to give an eskimo wet dreams.
2) Parliament is back in session. While its no secret that my political bent is to the right or as Tina puts it "just to the right of fascist" I am hoping that they can actually sit down and get some shit done. I hope for a Conservative majority one day but dont think its the right time for an election yet. We are still fragile from the global recession and we need some direction to go in. Right turn Clyde.
3) The gun control nuts are at it again. They dont seem to get it. CRIMINALS dont register their guns, only law abiding gun owners do. The gun laws in this country border on the draconian and any time theres some nut decides to cap a few people they all start screaming for more control. So one quick question for the gun control nuts. How to you propose more controls to those who follow no controls to begin with? I would love to hear the answer. More gun controls right now is like seeing a bunch of people driving 90 km/h through a 50 km/h zone and you think the best solution is to drop the speed limit to 30 km/h.
When will It stop.....Or how stupid do you really feel
Well today the new computer that we bought last October shit the bed. It had some sort of warning that the hard drive was not working correctly and that it needed to be checked for "consistency" whatever the hell that is. Every time we booted the computer this warning would come up and say the following:
Checking file system on C:
Type of file is NTFS
Volume label is S3A8371D004
One of you disks need to be checked for consistency.
Maybe one of Tinas Computer Geek friends has an idea what this means.....
Then it said that you can cancel the disk check by pressing any key, and I dont even have an any key...Nyuk, Nyuk.
I presseed the space bar and the computer went into a normal boot....
OK so thats the end of it right. Nope. WE decide that its something that needs the help of the Toshiba rep at the end of the 1-800 number. So I call their number and I get the call center conveniently located in Mumbai and I speak to Someone about my problem. Now, I have a problem with most things computer but to add the Indian accent to the mix makes for interesting times.
According to Rajesh I needed to take my computer back to when it was first born and rehatch things from scratch. This involves some sort of smoke and mirrors black magic shit that includes losing all of what we have downloaded since we got the damn machine.
So here I am now after many hours of this thing rebooting itself just to get it back to the point I was at 4 Months ago.
My point? Whatever happened to having "stuff" that we could fix ourselves. There was a time that just about anything in the world could be repaired with pliers and a roll of duct tape. Now everyones a "technician", you cant get anything fixed right away and you cant repair anything more intricate than a floor mat.
Maybe technology isnt so great afterall.......
On the upside, I cleaned out the trap under the sink and it works great. Theres a limit to my expert mechanical knowledge. Computers need not apply......

Charter of Rights and Freedoms????
So I just read a news story by Lorne Gunter in the National Post. Lorne, who is fast becoming my mostest favourite journalist because he pulls no punches and calls an idiot an idiot if required. He is also about the polar opposite to all the left wing, liberal hugging, CBC dripping socialist loving pieces of shit who call themselves journalists in this country. Especially those who work for the "national broadcaster", but I digress.
Lorne did a great articel on the loss of freedoms and rights in this country that the Charter is supposed to have embedded. Seems Trudeau had a plan. Take the RESPONSIBILITY for rights away from you and give it to the government who would look after things for you.
He gives the example of Marise Myrand. Ms Myrand is 400 lbs with a bad ticker and lungs and needs many meds and an electric wheelie thing to get around.
She asked her condo commission where she lives to get her a parking spot closer to the door so she could get herself in and out with less difficulty. The condo commission , rightly I think, said that wasnt their responsibility but she could ask the lady who owned the spot if she wished to change. The lady who owned the spot, Jocelyne Nolet is also infirm, said that she needed the spot as she couldnt carry things that are too heavy. You would think that would be the end of it, Right?
Wrong. Ms. Myrand, not being happy, took the condo commission to the Quebec human rights commission and, with government funded lawyer in tow, got a decision in her favour that forced the condo commission to give Ms. Nolets parking spot to Ms. Myrand.
On top of that the Quebec Human Rights Commission also decreed that the other 35 condo owners shall pay Ms. Myrand $10,000 for being "insufficiently sensitive to her disability". So this is part of Trudeaus legacy of the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms. He came up with human rights commissions who have made it a policy to screw some people in favour of others.
I just have two questions to ask:
1) What about Ms. Nolets Rights? Who's looking out for her........
2) When did Personal responsibility disappear?

Losing my Virginity
OK so I have been dragged kicking and screaming into the 21st Century. Evidently this is how people get their "word" out these days. I dont have a facebook account so therefore dont know what my kids are doing other than the rare phone call. They say its my fault beacuse I'm not wired....
Maybe it is, but you gotta give us old farts a chance. Maybe I dont want the world to know what I had for breakfast or whether I had a good BM this morning.
Getting sucked up in the vaccuum of the interweb is too much for some of us to handle all at once..... Baby steps.
So this is my baby step. Who woulda imagined me with a Blog? Well pretty much anyone in my family because, like the wife keeps tellling me "You're a crusty old bastard who needs to let everyone know your opinion".
Theres a lot to be said for opinions though. Its been said that they are like arseholes. Everyone has one. Problem is though is that some people think their opinion matters. Not true. Your opinion is just that, Yours. I dont have to agree with it and I probably wont in most cases. Get over it.
So I have opinions on lots of stuff, and I guess, because of this newfangled interweb thingy, I get to tell the world about them. Do I think you'll agree with my opinion. Nope.
Do I care. Not one iota. Its a perk of being old.
I'm gonna try to post something most days. It'll be stuff about the government and the country and taxes and all sorts of ideas that I have as to why this country has turned into a bunch of pussies over the past 50 years. It won't be pretty but I'm using as a form of therapy. A chance to vent my spleen. Read it at your peril.
